She Emerge Global Magazine

The emerging ‘big three’ on the women’s tour – Swiatek, Rybakina and Sabalenka – have won the past five majors between them.

Swiatek, 22, has only reached the fourth round once, in 2021, and warmed up by reaching a grass-court semi-final in Bad Homburg.

“I believe the best players, they can play on all surfaces. I want to become that kind of player who can play well on grass as well and feel comfortable there,” the French Open and US Open champion said.

Swiatek pulled out of Friday’s match against Italy’s Lucia Bronzetti after she “barely slept” on Thursday night, but says she felt better later in the day and will be “fine” for her opening match on Monday.

Rybakina, who uses her thumping serve to good effect on the grass, has also struggled physically and withdrew from Eastbourne last week.

The third seed said she was still recovering from a virus that caused her to pull out of the French Open, although she was well enough to practise with Australian Open champion Sabalenka on Centre Court on Friday.

“I have an allergy and the virus I caught was because the immune system was weak at that period. I couldn’t take much. The body had to recover by itself, so it took a lot of time,” Rybakina said.

“The preparation we did, I would say was good, but still not the amount of hours and work we wanted to put in. One week I didn’t do anything, then slowly started. It’s been tough.”

Sabalenka reached the Wimbledon semi-finals in 2021 but was not allowed to compete last year after the All England Club placed the sanction on Russian and Belarusian players in response to the war in Ukraine.

“I really missed this place. I can’t believe that I’m here,” she said. “I didn’t watch Wimbledon a lot last year. I felt so bad.”

Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur, last year’s beaten finalist, is still trying to recapture her best form after a calf injury, while Czech Karolina Muchova, who lost to Swiatek in the Roland Garros final, could pose a threat on the grass.

American Coco Gauff is always seen a contender at the majors and reached the Eastbourne semi-finals, while Czech two-time champion Petra Kvitova could also be in the mix.
