The Wombats said they were “so excited” to be announced as headliners for the opening night of the On The Waterfront festival “back where it all began”.
The Liverpool trio will headline the four-day festival at the city’s Pier Head on 19 June in what is being billed as the band’s “biggest hometown show to date”.
They will be joined on 19 June by Pale Waves and Sawyer Hill with more acts still to be announced by organisers.
The other headline acts are Wolfe Tones on 20 June, followed by Cream Classical Ibiza 50-piece Kaleidoscope Orchestra on 21 June, with Sting closing out the final night on 22 June.
The indie rock band made up of frontman Matthew ‘Murph’ Murphy, Tord Overland Knudsen and Dan Haggis, met as teenagers whilst studying at Liverpool Institute of Performing Art before bursting on to the music scene in 2007.
Almost two decades on they are set to release their sixth album Oh! The Ocean in February followed by a UK tour culminating in their headline act at On the Waterfront.
Drummer Haggis said: “We’re so excited to announce that we’re playing a huge hometown show, back where it all began.
“The Mersey and Liver Buildings will provide the backdrop, we’ll provide the tunes.”
He added it was going to be a “special night” full of new music from the band’s upcoming new album “and of course a load of old bangers”.
